We Make Good Progress
July 1st--7thFriday, 1st July
At last we're on the way "home"! It's seemed a long way from anywhere over here, and there has been little company. Days go by without meeting anyone to talk to. We travelled a long way today and moored up at Whittlesey, ready to go through Stanground Lock and on to the Nene tomorrow. At Whittlesey we moored up with another two narrowboats, the people on one of them kindly helped us to moor, as there wasn't much room.
Saturday, 2nd July
We left at 9.00, as we had an appointment to go through Stanground Lock at 10.00. We had rather underestimated how long it would take us to get there, and we eventually arrived at 10.30. I rang ahead to tell the lockie that we would be late. When we arrived, she said there was a strong current and that was what had slowed us down.
Then it was out on to the Nene and in to Peterborough, where we took on water and Trev went to Asda for essentials. Then out in to the country, and we moored up in a delightful spot. It was on a lake in a country park, and there were huge flocks of Canada and Greylag Geese, busy honking and flying around and making a lot of noise! The Park was well used, and there were people cycling, jogging, walking, picnicking, etc. All of this died down in the evening, and we had a barbecue. We also had the park almost to ourselves, except for some rather noisy neighbours on a boat, who seemed to be trying to recreate the glory days of Hi-de-hi! Still, they were enjoying themselves, and they were certainly giving the children a good time! And eventually, they had to go to bed, so it was quiet.
Sunday, 3rd July
When we came through Salter's Lode Lock, the boat got very dirty. We were sitting under the lock gate for three hours and, when it's down, it gets covered with silt. So I cleaned one side of the boat, and the roof, and polished it too. Our boat now looks very smart, as long as you view it from the right side!
We moved on along the Nene, towards Northampton. It will take us about a week to rejoin the grand Union at Gayton Junction. We didn't travel far, as Trev wanted to moor up and watch the Men's Finals at Wimbledon. We moored in a lovely peaceful spot, near Wansford Station. As we travelled along today, we kept seeing the trains of the Nene Valley Line, a private railway. They're a wonderful sight, pulled by steam engines.
09/06/07 I'm sorry--I've been reviewing the early pages of the website and found that this one has lost its ending. I can't remember a thing about it, so we'll just have to leave the rest of the week to the imagination!
