We Start to Plan our Summer Cruise
HE WISHES FOR THE CLOTHS OF HEAVEN
Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
W. B. Yeats
We've had a lot of discussion as to where we should go this summer. We have a couple of holidays planned--what do you mean, life is one long holiday! We're going to France and also the Isle of Mull--not in the same holiday I hasten to add. So this will shorten the time we have available for cruising, so we've decided not to buy a Gold Licence this year, which means we won't be doing the Thames.
Current (!) favourite is to do the Stratford Canal, on to the Avon and down to Tewkesbury, where we shall join the Severn and go down to Gloucester. Then on down the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to Sharpness, turn around and back up the Severn as far as Worcester where we shall go up the Birmingham and Worcester Canal to Birmingham.
Trev would love to go out at Sharpness and down the Severn Estuary as far as Bristol and then back up the Kennet and Avon Canal, but that would be where I jumped ship. I have no intention of doing the Severn Estuary! But actually I don't think this plan will come to fruition any way.So watch this space, whilst we refine our ideas!
