TO THE VERY END OF THE LLANGOLLEN
Oct.27th--Nov. 2ndWednesday, 27th October
Another trip to the dentist today! Bus from Ellesmere to Whitchurch, train to Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Coventry and bus to Kenilworth. However, the treatment is now finished, and hopefully I shan't have to go for nine months. Trev came with me this time, and we came back to the boat by car. We've given the garage up in Kenilworth now, as we shan't be using it for some months.
Thursday, 28th October
We got back to the boat by midday. I took the car to its parking spot at a marina, and Trev steered the boat to the marina to pick me up.
Friday, 29th October
We travelled to Ellesmere today and stocked up with provisions. We had lunch at The Black Lion and had a pump out at Blackwater Marina. We filled up with water at the BW yard and moored up by Bridge 66, just in time, as it started to rain.
Saturday, 30th October
Once the canal passes the junction with the Montgomery Canal, the bridge numbers start again, so tonight we moored up by Bridge 16. It was a lovely Autumn day today, misty but warm. There was a lot of boats about all rushing to get back to the marinas at the end of their week's holiday. However, we have the rest of our lives, before we get to the marina in the sky!
We moored up in the country on our own, with a lovely view in our front garden. There are downsides though--we couldn't get a Daily Telegraph, my favourite Saturday read.
Sunday, 31st October
Another beautiful Autumn day. The leaves are marvellous colours and we intended to go to Chirk Castle. We went through Chirk Tunnel, but the mooring to visit the castle was hopeless. The edges were so soft that mooring pins wouldn't stay in and there was nowhere else to moor. So we had to abandon the idea.
We carried on through Whitehouse Tunnel and over the Pontcyssylte Aqueduct. This took us in to Trefor Basin, and we turned left on to the last four miles of the Llangollen Canal. These four miles are probably the prettiest of all. We moored up in the country, though there are few places to moor as the canal is so narrow.
Monday, 1st, Tuesday 2nd November
We carried on along the Llangollen to its end. There are some very narrow single width parts of the canal, and two boats cannot pass. So I got on to the bike and went ahead with an intercom and checked it out. There was nothing coming, and so Trev brought the boat along and we moored up. There are new moorings here now. It costs GBP5 per night, and we have our own water and electricity. But the good news is that from Nov. 1st to March 31st, it's fre! So we're sitting here, basking in the warmth of an electric fire, with the immersion heater going and feeling quite smug!
